Matthew Hindley

In reaction to the COVID pandemic, starting with hard lockdown, I was desperate to pierce the suffocating and oppressive data layers. I wanted my work to cut through the dread, loneliness and uncertainty that hung like a grey mist over the globe.

The circle became a portal, rabbit hole, port-hole to further infinities. Longing for escape, my work acted in opposition to, rather than depicted current reality. My aim, in terms of societal responsibility and personal longing, was to circumvent the madness of reality.

In these new works I am continuing with this thread. These paintings reference both my own earlier works and art history.

Techniques and mark making developed from the different figurative languages I’ve historically explored are employed in an ongoing  exploration of abstraction.
