Marti Macfly is a painter, muralist and creative educator based in Cape Town. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts Cum Laude at Rhodes University, specialising in painting. Since then, he has travelled and painted extensively, consistently exploring the tension between wall/ canvas and public/ studio space in his work.
He is inspired by the journey of storytelling, the loose and endless potential of collage, the stories constructed to ‘capture memory’ while seeking out society and environmental counter narratives.
His intention is to allow the viewer the space to explore the unpredictable and, in doing so, challenge the major presumptions carried by the language of pictures, currently through the exploration of figure.
Through constant geographical and creative exploration, painting mural festivals, commissions, personal work and collaborations, his work has become an exploration of classical mural and oil painting styles in both studio and public space.
